Forrest, the multi-stranded picture wire is probably shark line :) Pay a visit to the tackle shop and ask for plastic-coated wire trace. The stuff comes with ridiculous breaking strains.

For tensioning it, follow what the musicians do: use a peg at one end. Or both if you feel inclined :)

I'll probably stay with #8 studding for the near to term. I can get three feet of that for a shade over $1 and applying tension and securing it to end plates is a trivial exercise.
